Heal the Gulf

Summer Solstice 2010

Monday, June 21, is the first day of Summer. It is also World Peace and Prayer Day. A good time to pray for clean water in Gulf of Mexico. June 21st is also the day that Chief Looking Horse, the Peace Chief of the Lakota Oyate, has chosen: “We ask for prayers that the oil spill, this bleeding, will stop. That the winds stay calm to assist in the work. Pray for the people to be guided in repairing this mistake, and that we may also seek to live in harmony, as we make the choice to change the destructive path we are on.”

Let me start by sharing two experiences.

The first is about the California Drought that lasted from 1987 to 1992.

I was living in Oregon in 1992, and I had many friends in the Native American community. We received word that our Indian friends were concerned because the salmon were dying as the streams were drying up in California, and soon they would not be able to fish. One Native American man noticed that there was a big storm out at sea, and he got the idea that if people up and down the West Coast held dances and prayer circles the next night, and if they chanted and prayed for rain, then we could bring that storm inland. My little group of friends were one of many groups that danced and prayed like crazy that night, and miraculously, the next morning, it started to rain. It wasn’t just a little rain. But it wasn’t too much, either. It kept right on raining for weeks and weeks, until it rained enough to fill up those rivers and bring back the salmon.

Here are a few statistics to back up my story, though of course we all know that it could have been “just a coincidence.” The California drought lasted from 1987 to 1992 and is considered the most severe drought in California's history (Priest, et al., 1993). The 1987-1992 drought finally ended with the spectacular winter of 1992-93. By February 1993 there was already 125 inches (317.5 cm) of snow at Horse Camp compared with only 13 inches (33 cm) in 1991 and 41 inches (104 cm) in 1992. As a comparison, in February of 1974 there was 163 inches (414 cm). http://www.siskiyous.edu/shasta/env/drought/index.htm]

The second concerns the near-meltdown of the nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979.

It started on Wednesday, March 28. By 8 am on Thursday, the Governor advised that pregnant women and pre-school age children within a five-mile radius should evacuate the area. On Friday, a hydrogen bubble was found in the dome of the pressure vessel, and steam and hydrogen were removed from the reactor by venting straight into the atmosphere. Various authorities and the press were trying to downplay the severity of the situation, but by Friday night a friend who was at the site told me that “only prayer can prevent a meltdown.” (Commissioner Victor Gilinsky later wrote that five weeks after the accident he learned that "the reactor operators had measured fuel temperatures near the melting point.")

Up until my friend talked about prayer, I felt entirely helpless, but suddenly I was mobilized. I knew several groups that were praying for peace on Sunday nights on 8 pm, so that seemed like a good target time. I was in touch with Sun Bear and many other spiritual leaders up and down the West Coast. I got on the phone and called a bunch of key players, asking them to spread the word. There were two big concerns. One was that the core of the reactor would melt down, and the other was that huge amounts of radiation were already being emitted. Using the powerful vibratory tools, I suggested two visualizations: 1) Penetrate the reactor with a blue light, to cool it down. 2) Surround the facility with white light, to contain the radiation. That was 8 pm West Coast Time. The reactor was on the East Coast, three hours ahead of us.

The next morning, the newspapers came out with huge headlines: REACTOR COOLS! RADIATION CONTAINED! The story said that “for unknown reasons,” at around midnight, the reactor began to cool and the radiation was contained. You can read about it in Wikipedia, under Three Mile Island Accident. “In the end, the reactor was brought under control, although full details of the accident were not discovered until much later, following extensive investigations by both a presidential commission and the NRC. The Kemeny Commission Report concluded that "there will either be no case of cancer or the number of cases will be so small that it will never be possible to detect them. The same conclusion applies to the other possible health effects."

Did we stop the meltdown? Did we contain the radiation? We will never know. But I certainly believe that we have the ability to change our reality--especially when we act as a group.

Is it in the best interest of the planet to stop this disaster—given that it seems to be leading to some important legislature that will curtail offshore drilling? Personally, I think that enough time has elapsed and the problem has been severe enough that people got the message. Sure, we could have taken the same attitude toward the reactor: better to let it melt down, and then people will really be convinced. But the event that did occur significantly slowed down the building of new reactors for the last thirty years.

I've been thinking a lot about how we could make a difference in the Gulf of Mexico. I had some different ideas about things that we could do on Monday, June 21st, but nothing quite clicked. I had the feeling that I needed to meet with my friend and Shamaness, Neesa Maloney. So we got together, and we sat down to ask for Guidance, and some great stuff came through. Fortunately, I recorded it. Please go to

and click on Solstice Celebration for a quick video that shares our vision for how an already-healed earth can displace the wounded earth.

Please join us on Monday! Try to find a body of water to sit next to, and touch the water. If that's not possible, just hold a glass of water and place a special crystal in the water.

ALSO, here’s a special prayer for the water, from Masaru Emoto. The words at the end come from the Hawaiian ho’oponopono process for making things right. It is very powerful. Let’s say this prayer each day, and ESPECIALLY on the Solstice.

Masaru Emoto is the scientist from Japan who did all the research on water crystals that showed that water responds to emotions. Many of us feel angry when we think about what is happening in the Gulf.  But his work indicates that we would be of greater assistance to the water if we set an intention of love and healing that is so large, so overwhelming that we can perform a miracle in the Gulf of Mexico. Our united energy, speaking this prayer daily...multiple times daily... AND ESPECIALLY ON THE SOLSTICE....can literally shift the balance of destruction that is happening. We don't have to know how...we just have to recognize that the power of love is greater than any other power in the Universe.

(The prayer)
"I send the energy of love and gratitude to the waters and all living creatures in the Gulf of Mexico and its surroundings
, to the whales, dolphins, pelicans, fish, shellfish, planktons, corals, algae...humankind...to ALL living creatures...

I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I Love You."

Blissings,

JOY
